My name is Dickens

I am a 2-3 year old Maltese Poodle mix.  I have a unique coloring, shades of gray.  My legs are long, and my body is thin but I’m a happy guy and I have a new home.  So far so good.  My new owner is learning but I will have her in shape in no time.  Meanwhile I will cover up my food with a towel.  No one is sure why I do that, and I am not telling them.  They think I am really funny, but it is a sign I am smart.  Here are some of my first photos.

His name is Tucker

I have never actually had a pet. I have had a few dogs that lived with me for extended stays. But that really isn’t the same thing. Many of my friends and acquaintances have tried for years to convince me I should have a dog of my own. After dog sitting here a couple of weeks ago, I realized that I missed having that little being as a companion. So I’ve done the web search and found a few prospects. Everyone is very excited and tonight I met my first prospective dog. His name is Tucker and he is an adorable Maltese about 3-4 years old. Spunky little guy. We met at a dog park in Griffith Park. His foster mom brought him. He was having a great time chasing around with other dogs. They were almost all bigger than him but he kept right in there. See for yourself.

Backyard buzzing

Insects make great subjects.  I went out to pick strawberries the other day and was met by a bee enjoying the nectar of a strawberry flower.  It was cloudy so I thought it would make a good day for another bee shot.  The camera is the Nikon D300.  I don’t have a “macro” lens, but I use a Canon 500D closeup lens on my Nikon 28-80 kit lens.  One nice thing about using that lens is how light it is compared to bigger “pro” lens.   Here are the results.  I confess the lens didn’t get me in that close.  These images a cropped , but the image quality is good.

Oh and the strawberries at the end were the harvest for the day.

LA Times Book Festival Photos

LA Times columnist Steve Lopez and Father Gregory Boyle. Photo by Nina Zacuto

Went to the LA Times Book Festival Sunday, May 1 and  took a few photos  during a couple of panels we attended.   LA Times columnist Steve Lopez interviewed Father Gregory Boyle, who works with the successful Homeboy project in Los Angeles and has a new book about about it.  He talked about the fact that he has just this week buried his 175th gang or former gang kid.

The other panel was about Los Angeles mystery or crime writers and the panel included former OJ prosecutor Marcia Clark, who has a new book out, which is the first of a series she is doing about a – you guested it – LA District Attorney.

It was an interesting day.

I shot these using an ISO of 1250 and 1600.  They don’t look too bad with Lightroom noise reduction and sharpening.
